Production of the Su-15T continued from December 1971 in the form of the Su-15TM, featuring a modernized Typhoon-M radar and a new designation.
Tests were conducted from February 15, 1975, to July 20, 1978, and production of the Su-15TM continued until 1975.
In all previous versions of the Su-15, the radar antenna was covered with a cone, but this design was unsuitable for operating the powerful Typhoon-M.
The nose of the Su-15TM had an ogive shape, a compromise between electronics and aerodynamic requirements.
Using the SAU-58-2 system, a Su-15TM intercepting a low-altitude target was automatically guided by the Vozdukh-1m system to an altitude of 200 m (656 ft), so that the target was in front of it or even slightly higher.
However, the pilots did not accept these extremely low-level attacks with the Su-15TM fighter.
Soon afterward, production of the Su-15TM was discontinued.
