Production of the Yak-38 Forger began in 1975, making it the second operational VSTOL aircraft in the world after the Harrier series. The aircraft's wings are centrally mounted, delta-shaped with blunt tips and negative pitch. There is a turbo engine and two lift nozzles. There are two exhaust pipes on the underside of the rear fuselage. Large, semi-circular air intakes are located under the cockpit well in front of the wings. The fuselage is long and has a pointed nose and tapered tail.

Yak-38U "Forger-B" is a two-seat training version for the Soviet naval aviation. This version differed from the base aircraft by having an enlarged fuselage to accommodate a two-seat cockpit. The Yak-38U entered service on November 15, 1978. A total of 38 Yak-38Us were produced, with the 38th aircraft being delivered in 1981.
