The MiG-31 "Foxhound" was developed as the successor to the MiG-25 "Foxbat"; the Ye-155MP prototype made its maiden flight on September 16, 1975. As the world's heaviest interceptor, the MiG-31 is significantly heavier than comparable aircraft. At the same time, two powerful D-30-F6 engines and a reinforced airframe gave it a top speed of Mach 2.8 at high altitude and Mach 1.23 at low altitude.
The MiG-31 entered service with the Soviet Air Defense Forces in 1982 and was deployed for various long-range missions. More than 300 aircraft are in service in both Russia and Kazakhstan.
