It was initially armed with the GSh-6-23M Gatling gun, which was later replaced by a new 30 mm GSh-6-30 six-barrel cannon with 260 rounds of ammunition housed in a fuselage nacelle.
It also received greatly improved electronic countermeasures (ECM) and a new PrNK-23K navigation/attack system for automatic flight control, gunfire, and weapon release.
This modification, however, was not very successful due to the new cannon's heavy recoil, and bursts lasting more than two or three seconds often resulted in permanent damage to the airframe.
A total of 200 MiG-27Ms were built between 1978 and 1983, plus 160 for India. The aircraft is currently in service with the Sri Lankan Air Force.
