It was designed by the Mikoyan-Gurevich Bureau in the Soviet Union.
Development began in 1964, the prototype first flew on June 10, 1967, and was first seen during World Aviation Day flyovers at Domodedovo Airport in Moscow on July 9, 1967.
It was delivered to the Soviet Air Force in 1970.
Over 5,000 aircraft of the entire family were built before production ceased in the late 1980s.
Large quantities were exported to countries outside the Soviet Union.
