The F-100 was one of the first American aircraft to be deployed in Vietnam, and remained in service throughout most of the war.
Although not as widely used as the F-105 Thunderchiefs and F-4 Phantoms, F-100Ds and some Cs were used extensively in the South to provide close air support and perform other fighter-bomber missions.
Production of the F-100D began on July 7, 1955, and its first flight took place on January 24, 1956.
Deliveries abroad began in late 1956.
It was deployed to the United States Air Forces in Europe (USAFE) squadrons at Chaumont and Etain in France and to the squadrons at Itazuke, Japan.
High demand for the F-100D in Vietnam meant that this variant did not enter Air National Guard (ANG) service until 1969.
A total of 1,274 F-100Ds were built by North American, including 940 in Inglewood and 334 in Columbus.
