The A-4 Skyhawk was developed by Douglas in response to the US Navy's requirement for a jet-powered attack aircraft to replace the aging A-1 Skyraider.
Douglas opted for a design that minimized size, weight, and complexity.
The result was an aircraft that weighed only half the Navy's required weight.
The wings were so compact that they did not need to be folded for carrier storage.
A-4F: A further development of the A-4E with additional avionics housed in a hump on the dorsal fuselage (this feature was later retrofitted to A-4Es and some A-4Cs) and a more powerful J52-P-8A engine producing 41 kN of thrust, later upgraded in service to the J52-P-408 producing 50 kN of thrust.
147 examples were built. Some served with the Blue Angels aerobatic team from 1973 to 1986.
