The Growler's flight performance is similar to that of the F/A-18E/F. This capability allows the Growler to perform both escort and jamming missions. Growlers can escort F/A-18s during all phases of an attack mission.
The Growler has more than 90% commonality with the standard Super Hornet, sharing the airframe, the Raytheon AN/APG-79 AESA radar, and weapons systems such as the AN/AYK-22 stores management system.
The majority of the airborne electronic attack equipment is mounted where the internal 20 mm cannon was formerly located, as well as on the wingtips.
Nine weapon stations remain vacant to accommodate additional weapons or jammers.
Additional electronics include AN/ALQ-218 wideband receivers on the wingtips and ALQ-99 tactical high- and low-band jammers.
The combination of the ALQ-218 and ALQ-99 forms a comprehensive electronic warfare system capable of detecting and disrupting all known surface-to-air threats.
The EA-18G can be equipped with up to five ALQ-99 jammers and typically carries two AIM-120 self-defense missiles and two AGM-88 high-speed anti-radiation (HARM) missiles.
