It first flew on December 21, 1970.
The F-14 was the United States Navy's primary maritime air superiority fighter, fleet defense interceptor, and tactical reconnaissance fighter from 1974 to 1976.
It later performed precision-attack missions after the Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night (LANTIRN) system was integrated.
Developed after the collapse of the F-111B project, the F-14 was the first American 10-series fighter to be developed using lessons learned from air combat against MiGs during the Vietnam War.
The F-14 first entered service with the US Navy in 1974 aboard the USS Enterprise, replacing the F-4 Phantom II.
The first 12 F-14As were prototypes (sometimes referred to as YF-14As).
The US Navy received 478 F-14As, and 79 were delivered to Iran.
The final 102 F-14As were delivered with improved TF30-P-414A engines.
In addition, an 80th F-14A was built for Iran but delivered to the US Navy.
