The original aluminum alloy fuselage was replaced with one that made extensive use of composite materials, providing significant weight reduction and increased payload and range.
An all-new single-piece wing provides approximately 14 percent more area and greater thickness. The British version of the Harrier II used different avionics systems, an additional missile pylon forward of each wing landing gear, and reinforced wing leading edges to meet higher bird strike requirements.
The GR7 made its maiden flight in May 1990 and its first operational use in August 1995 over the former Yugoslavia. While the GR7 was deployed during testing on Invincible-class aircraft carriers as early as June 1994, its first operational deployments at sea began in 1997.
This agreement was formalized with Joint Force Harrier, which operates with the Royal Navy's Sea Harriers.
