It was the US Navy's first all-weather attack aircraft.
Before 1962, the aircraft was known as the A2F and was renamed the A-6 Intruder in service.
Its outstanding all-weather capability quickly made the A-6 the primary strike force of the Navy and Marines, and it remained in service until the Vietnam War.
The A-6E was the last series of the Intruder family.
It was designed for strike missions.
A new AN/APQ-148 radar replaced the older version, and the DIANE system was replaced by a state-of-the-art computer system.
The new CAINS navigation system was installed in the late 1970s.
The CAINS A-6E can be identified by the additional air scoop on top of the fuselage near the vertical stabilizer.
From 1979 onward, all A-6E Intruders were equipped with the AN/ASS-33 tracking and ranging system, part of the TRAM system. It was housed in a small turret beneath the radar dome.
The A-6E TRAM participated in most of the Navy's military operations during the last century. All Intruders were replaced by the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet in 1997.
