The A-10, a Cold War product of the U.S. Air Force, was developed and deployed in the late 1970s to fight Warsaw Pact forces in Central Europe.
It was instead deployed to the Persian Gulf in 1991 as part of Operation Desert Storm.
It subsequently saw action again in Bosnia and later in Kosovo.
In all these combat missions, the A-10 validated its designers' objectives.
Fairchild-Republic delivered a two-seat Night/Adverse Weather (N/AW) A-10 variant to Edwards Air Force Base for flight testing in 1979.
The N/AW was 2,000 pounds heavier than the single-seat version. Although the N/AW proved highly capable, the U.S. Air Force was not interested and opted for other aircraft.
