It originated from a 1944 USAF requirement for a day fighter.
The F-84 made its maiden flight in 1946 and entered service in 1947.
By the time production of the F-84 ended in 1953, a total of approximately 4,457 aircraft across six different variants had been manufactured.
The first truly operational and fully capable model in the "Thunderjet" series was the F-84E, which entered service in 1949. The F-84E was withdrawn from active USAF service in 1956 but remained in use with Air National Guard (ANG) units until 1959.
