It was created by combining features of the Mk.XI Spitfire with the powerful Griffon engine of the XIV and was one of the fastest and, some say, most beautiful of all Spitfire variants.
Due to its role as a reconnaissance aircraft, it was unarmed and relied on its high top speed to evade potential enemies.
After the war, the PR.CIC served in the Far East, operating over Hainan Island and completing the last operational mission of an RAF Spitfire over Malaya on June 10, 1957.
