The Curtiss P-40 Warhawk was an American single-engine, single-seat, all-metal fighter and ground-attack aircraft that first flew in 1938.
The British Commonwealth and Soviet air forces used the name Tomahawk for models equivalent to the original P-40, P-40B, and P-40C.
In all, 18 Royal Air Force (RAF) squadrons, four Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) squadrons, three South African Air Force (SAAF) squadrons and two Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) squadrons used the in RAF formations served, P-40.
The first squadrons of the Desert Air Force (DAF) received the type in early 1941.
