The Wellington was Britain's primary bomber during the first two years of the war.
After being supplanted by Lancasters in the European theater, it continued to fly in many other theaters and in many roles until the end of the war.
It was particularly effective in North Africa, where it could fly faster than most Italian fighters and carry a heavier bomb load than the Italians.
Its success is demonstrated by the high production run of 11,461 Wellingtons.
The Wellington Mk.IC had a crew of six: pilot, radio operator, navigator/bombardier, observer/nose gunner, tail gunner, and gunner.
It was powered by two 1,050 hp Bristol Pegasus XVIII engines, which propelled it to 235 mph. It had a service ceiling of 18,000 feet and a range of 2,550 miles.
It was armed with eight 0.303 caliber machine guns and could carry 4,500 pounds of bombs.
