For many, the Supermarine Spitfire is considered the most beautiful single-seat fighter aircraft of World War II. The prototype, designed by the renowned British engineer Reginald J. Mitchell, made its maiden flight on March 5, 1936. It was an advanced low-wing monoplane featuring a very slender fuselage and smooth metal skinning with flush-riveted joints.
The Mk I and II versions demonstrated their outstanding performance during the Battle of Britain, and by early 1941, the majority of fighter squadrons were equipped with this aircraft type. Improvements were made at the suggestion of pilots to maintain a performance edge over conventional aircraft. Early modifications led to the Spitfire Mk. V series, which became the most widely produced of all Mk variants. Key innovations included three different wing armament options, the installation of the more powerful Merlin engine (Type 45), and the use of "fishtail" exhaust stacks with flame dampers. The most frequently produced Mk. V variant was the "b" wing version, which featured a mixed armament of two 7.7 mm machine guns and one 20 mm cannon per wing.
Although the characteristic elliptical wings were retained on most Spitfires, some Mk. Vb aircraft were fitted with clipped wingtips to improve maneuverability at low altitudes. Throughout its production run, the Spitfire underwent numerous minor and major modifications and proved its worth in every theater of war.
