Steep Fire Guns are designed to hit targets that are not directly in the field of view. In order to achieve this and to be able to shoot over obstacles, they had to be fired at a steep angle. The most famous and heaviest steep-fire guns in Germany included the "Dicke Berta" and the "Karl" mortar. They were used primarily against enemy fortresses as "concrete crackers." Gerhard Taube tells in this volume how this type of weapon has developed. He describes in detail the history and production history of the heavy colossi as well as their use in the two world wars.
