The twin-engine Junkers Ju 88 bomber was undoubtedly one of the mainstays of the Luftwaffe during the Second World War. Exceptionally robust, versatile, and flexible, it was deployed as a conventional bomber, night fighter, ground-attack aircraft, reconnaissance plane, and torpedo bomber.
The Ju 88 A-17 was developed based on the same airframe as the A-4 bomber variant, which featured a low-wing configuration and two reliable, high-performance 1,700 hp BMW radial engines. However, several significant modifications were made to allow for the carriage of aerial torpedoes. The Ju 88 A-17 was used against Allied shipping across key theaters of war—from the North Sea and the Atlantic to the Mediterranean.
