In 1941, Henschel Flugzeug-Werke proposed to the Reich Air Ministry a design for a remotely operated missile to counter the bomber force. The design was initially rejected, however, and in early 1943, as Allied air superiority became increasingly apparent, designer Herbert Wagner took up the idea again. Henschel had about 150 prototypes of the surface-to-air missile known as the "Schmetterling" built and tested. This model kit includes alternative parts corresponding to later prototypes documented by photos during tests at Peenemünde in September 1944. The dimensions of the missile are corresponding to the Hs 117 Schmetterling missile on display at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum Udvar-Hazy Center (USA). It appears to be an Hs 117 C, or the Hs 117 A-1, the production version, based on the exterior configuration and dimensions.
