Known for its versatility, the aircraft, in its various versions, was capable of performing a wide range of missions, including strategic bombing, surface raids, and night fighter missions.
The Dornier Do 217K variant was particularly notable for its reinforced fuselage, redesigned wings, and improved engines.
It was further developed to allow the Ruhrstahl SD 1400 "Fritz X" radio-guided bomb—an advanced and groundbreaking weapon for its time—to be mounted and deployed from an underwing station.
In this configuration, the Do 217K was primarily used in the Mediterranean.
On September 9, 1943, the Italian battleship Roma was hit and sunk by a Fritz X off the coast of Sardinia.
