The Messerschmitt P.1101 entered service with the OKL in the summer of 1944 and was the world's first aircraft with a variable wing geometry.
Originally intended to be powered by the Heinkel HeS 011 engine, the prototype was equipped with a Jumo 004 engine.
Before the prototype was completed in April 1945, the Americans occupied the Messerschmitt factory in Oberammergau and brought the prototype to the USA, where they developed a prototype for the Bell X-5 aircraft, which could change its wing angle in flight.
