The Panzer III was the common designation for a medium tank developed by Germany in the 1930s and widely used in World War II. Its official German designation was Panzerkampfwagen III Sd Kfz. 141 (abbreviated PzKpfw III). It was intended to engage other armored fighting vehicles and serve alongside the supporting Panzer IV. However, since the Germans were facing the formidable T-34, more powerful anti-tank guns were required. Because the Panzer IV had a larger turret ring, the roles were reversed. The Panzer IV was equipped with the long-barreled 7.5 cm KwK 40 gun and participated in tank-to-tank battles. The Panzer III was obsolete in this role and was replaced by the Panzer IV for most purposes.

From 1942, the final version of the Panzer III was equipped with the 7.5 cm KwK 37 L/24, which was better suited for infantry support. Production of the Panzer III ended in 1943. However, the capable Panzer III chassis served as the hull for the Sturmgeschütz III until the end of the war.
