The history of the development of a tank destroyer with an 8.8 cm gun goes back to the 1939s, but it was not until 1942 that the Panther chassis began to be included in the planning. In January 1944 the first Jagdpanther were delivered. Changes to the vehicle later led to the division into early and late versions. The late version went to the front in October 1944. The Jagdpanther was intended as an offensive weapon to protect advancing infantry from enemy tanks. Even if it was considered the most successful tank destroyer in WW2, it was never available in sufficient numbers to be decisive.
