It all started with wooden models
In 1949 Yoshio Tamiya founded a company under the name "TAMIYA SHOYI", initially as a timber trade and sawmill. By 1948, he was already specializing more and more in building wooden ship and aircraft models.
1951 a fire destroyed the entire wooden stock, so the family business decided to dedicate the future to model building.
From wooden to plastic models
In the mid-1950s the wave of plastic kits from abroad also swept into Japan, and wooden models were increasingly squeezed out of the market.
Tamiya followed this trend and completed the first plastic model, the Japanese battleship Yamato (Link: New edition 2013)
At first the company tried to get into production with cheaper used injection molds. Pretty quick they were successful in selling and it was possible to invest in new molds.
Since Tamiya placed great emphasis on the smallest details and quality from the beginning, they were soon able to create an excellent reputation in modeling circles at home and abroad.
What are the two stars all about?
The first kits were labeled TAMIYA MOKEI PLASTIC MODEL KIT on the left side, decorated with two stars in blue and yellow.
Shunsaku Tamiya, son-in-law of the founder, had the idea that his younger brother Masao Tamiya, a design student, could create a new logo.
He changed the colour of the two emblematic stars: "Passion" is the theme of the red star on the left and "Precision and Sincerity" is symbolized by the blue star on the right side.
In the 1960s the logo was changed into the one we know today.
