The legendary Mini achieved an impressive second place in the prestigious "Car of the Century" vote in 1999. Produced from 1959 to 2000 without major design changes, the original Mini pioneered the multitude of compact, front-engine, front-wheel-drive vehicles seen today. Despite being only 3 meters long, its 10-inch wheels—positioned at the corners—allowed for a spacious interior capable of seating four adults.
It was packed with engineering innovations, such as a two-box design featuring a transversely mounted engine and transmission (with the gearbox sharing the engine's oil supply), as well as double-wishbone front suspension and trailing-arm rear suspension using rubber cones instead of conventional springs. In 1959, the British Motor Company launched two versions of the Mini under its Morris and Austin brands: the Morris Mini Minor and the Austin Seven.
In 1961, John Cooper—a renowned figure in British motor racing—modified the engine and introduced the car to the public as the Morris Mini Cooper. Later, the Mini Cooper S was developed for racing and rallying. The Mini Cooper 1275S Mk.I was introduced in 1964 with a 1,275 cc engine. Shortly before this, the 1071S had competed in the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally, facing off against many more powerful rivals. It compensated for its lack of power with agility, securing overall victory in 1964. The 1275S went on to repeat this feat in 1965 and 1967. Both Morris and Austin versions of the Mini Cooper S were produced, differing only in their radiator grille design and badging. And although a new version of the Mini was announced in September 2000, the global popularity of the original Mini remains undiminished.
