The Model S tank is the second generation of battle tanks that Sweden produced after the war. This vehicle was developed by the Bofors company in 1957 and adopted by the army in 1972. A total of 300 units were produced. In order to meet modern war requirements, the Swedish ground forces carried out a modernization in the 1980s to convert the Model S tank. After the conversion until 1989, 200 Model S tanks were in service, which were called the Model Strv 103C. The main upgrade included: installation of a new laser rangefinder, installation of a fire extinguisher and a control computer, high-performance diesel engine with a new gearbox of the V-53T model, installation of additional side skirts and bars on the armor, and installation of a dozer blade.
