The Marder infantry fighting vehicle was intended to be a counterpart to the Leopard 1 in the newly created Bundeswehr. Over the years, several generations of the Marder were developed, and its combat effectiveness was continually improved. It saw practical use during KFOR missions, as well as in Afghanistan and now also in Ukraine.
The 1A3 version of the Marder infantry fighting vehicle entered service in 1989.
In 2023, the German government announced the provision of Marder vehicles to support the Ukrainian army against the Russian invasion.
