The Merkava is the name given to a series of main battle tanks that form the backbone of the IDF Armored Corps.
Development of the tank began in 1970, and the Merkava Mark 1 officially entered service in 1979.
Four main variants were used, with the Merkava Mark 4 being the latest version.
The tanks first saw extensive use in the 1982 Lebanon War.
The Merkava Mark III BAZ or Mark IV tanks were specifically modified for urban warfare.
