The 7.5 cm PaK 40 anti-tank gun was developed by Rheinmetall in 1939–41.
Their development became more urgent after heavier Russian tanks were encountered in Operation Barbarossa in 1941.
The PaK 40 entered service in November 1941 and soon became the standard German anti-tank gun of the Second World War with 23,500 units produced.
With a combat weight of 1425 kg, the PaK 40 required a tractor with sufficient power to move it across the battlefield.
The Sd.Kfz. 251/1 Ausf.D was ideal.
