The M39 series of 5-ton cargo trucks were the workhorses of the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam. They not only transported supplies and troops, but were also used as dump trucks in engineer units designated the M51. It had a 3.0 m long dump body with a 3.8 m³ capacity, cab protection, and a rear tailgate that could be folded up or down. In Germany, these standard trucks were also a common sight among the U.S. units stationed there. In Vietnam, such trucks were equipped with armored bodies and appropriate weapons to protect convoys.
