It was designed to combine the agility of the Peugeot VLTT liaison vehicle with adequate protection against small-arms fire, artillery shrapnel, mines, and NBC threats. The VBL is fully amphibious, reaching a speed of 5.4 km/h in water, and is air-transportable via C-130, C-160, and A400M aircraft.
Developed in the 1980s, the VBL entered service in France in 1990.
Its fuel consumption is 16 liters per 100 km.
