It was manufactured until 1999 by AMX International—an Italian-Brazilian joint venture—and is designated A-1 by the Brazilian Air Force.
The AMX is capable of operating day and night at high subsonic speeds and low altitudes; if necessary, it can also operate from bases with inadequately equipped or damaged runways. A low infrared signature and reduced radar cross-section make it difficult to detect, while the robust design of its structure and systems enhances survivability. Integrated electronic countermeasures (ECM), air-to-air missiles, and nose-mounted cannons ensure self-defense capabilities.
