The A-4 Skyhawk was developed by Douglas in response to a US Navy tender for a jet-powered attack aircraft to replace the older A-1 Skyraider. Douglas chose a design that would minimize size, weight and complexity. The result was an aircraft that weighed only half of the Navy's weight requirement. Its wing was so compact that it did not need to be folded for storage on aircraft carriers.
A-4M: Version developed specifically for the Marines with improved avionics and a more powerful J52-P-408a engine with 50 kN thrust, enlarged cockpit and IFF system. She was later equipped with the Hughes AN/ASB-19 Angle Rate Bombing System (ARBS) with TV and laser target tracker; 158 machines were built.
