The Martin company revolutionized aircraft design with its Model 139 bomber, which the USAAF also designated as the B-10, B-12, or B-14, depending on its engine. In the early 1930s, fabric-covered biplanes dominated the skies when suddenly an all-metal monoplane with an enclosed cockpit and cowled engines appeared.
These new bombers were not only faster than other competing models but also faster than contemporary fighter aircraft. This led to a worldwide demand for new, modified fighter designs.
The Model 139 was also an export success. The bombers were delivered to the armed forces of several countries, including the Dutch East Indies, which received two versions: the WH-1 and the WH-2. These differed in the configuration of their R-1820 engines and the type of engine cowling.
These new bombers were not only faster than other competing models but also faster than contemporary fighter aircraft.
