At the end of the 1930s, Letov mainly produced the type Š.328, a multi-role biplane whose first batch was ordered by the military as early as 1934 and delivered a year later.
Seven more batches followed, but the last of these was ordered by the German occupation forces. The batches, or rather "series", differed from each other in their equipment and armament.
One of the most noticeable differences, first seen in the 3rd series aircraft, was the change from an aluminium-covered upper fuselage to plywood panels with fabric covering.
A version equipped with an Avia VR-36 in-line engine, designated Š.428, did not get beyond the prototype stage.
The Letov Š.328 was considered by the army as a multi-role aircraft that could be used for interception (of enemy bombers or night aircraft), bombing, reconnaissance or ground attack.
Until the occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1939, the type formed the mainstay of the reconnaissance and light bomber units.
By this time, of course, the type was quite obsolete and the intention was to find a replacement for it.
There were also four Letov Š.328s, which differed considerably from the rest of the production and were quite unique in the entire history of Czechoslovak military aviation.
These airframes were target tugs, and since the firing range was in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia in the Bay of Kotor, they were also equipped with a pair of metal floats.
The floats were interchangeable with normal land landing gear, and during the winter months these four machines flew back to Czechoslovakia where they were fitted with wheels.
