The ships were built starting in 1941 and entered service in 1942.
By 1944, 175 ships had been built at eleven different shipyards.
This makes the Fletcher class one of the most numerous classes of surface warships in the world.
The ships participated in all major US Navy operations during the Pacific War.
Their service in the US Navy continued, with interruptions, until 1971. Several destroyers were transferred to other nations, including Germany, and remained in active service for many years afterward.
The USS Fletcher (DD-445) is the first ship of the US Navy's Fletcher class and was named in honor of Admiral Frank Friday Fletcher. Construction began on October 2, 1941, was completed on May 3, 1942, and she was commissioned on June 30 of the same year.
After commissioning, the Fletcher was deployed to the Western Pacific.
In 1942, she participated in the First Battle of Guadalcanal. In 1943, the Fletcher continued to conduct patrol and transport escort missions in the Solomon Islands and provided cover for a new landing point north of Guadalcanal. On January 11, 1943, during a patrol mission, the Fletcher sank the Japanese submarine I-18. In 1944, the USS Fletcher participated in covering the assault forces on the island of Luzon and provided fire support for the Nasugbu Bay landing operation, the Corgi do landing operation, the mine clearance operation in Manila Bay, and patrol and escort missions in the Philippines. On May 13, 1945, the Fletcher returned to the West Coast for major repairs and remained in San Diego until she was decommissioned and sealed on January 15, 1947.
On October 3, 1949, the sealed Fletcher was converted into an escort destroyer and recommissioned. She later participated in the Korean War and returned to China after the war as an anti-submarine training ship. She was decommissioned again in 1969 and broken up in 1972.
During her service, the Fletcher received 15 Combat Stars in World War II and 5 in the Korean War.
