The keel of the USS Arizona was laid on March 16, 1914, at the New York Navy Yard; she was launched on June 19, 1915—with Miss Esther Ross serving as sponsor—and commissioned at the shipyard on October 17, 1916, under the command of Captain John D. McDonald.
The Arizona was a *Pennsylvania*-class battleship of the United States Navy. She was the third ship named in honor of the 48th state, yet the first to receive the name only after the state had actually been admitted to the Union. The USS Arizona became widely known primarily due to her catastrophic and dramatic sinking—in which 1,177 people lost their lives—during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941; the event that led to the United States' entry into World War II.
