The ZiS-42 was a Soviet half-track developed from the ZiS-5. During World War II, it served not only as a transport vehicle but also as a platform for improvised self-propelled guns. One such solution involved mounting a 57mm ZiS-2 anti-tank gun on the cargo bed, creating a light, fast, and mobile tank destroyer.

Vehicle Characteristics

• Chassis: ZiS-42 (half-track, improved off-road capability)
• Armament: 57 mm ZiS-2 anti-tank gun
• Crew: 4–6 soldiers
• Role: Light tank destroyer / Mobile anti-tank station
• Service period: 1942–1944 (primarily frontline improvisations)

Construction and Modifications

• On the truck bed:
• The complete ZiS-2 gun mount was mounted, often without major modifications.
• The floor was reinforced and anchor points added.
• Side panels made of boards or sheet metal were fitted.
• The gun's traverse capability was largely retained.
• The crew operated the gun while standing on the truck bed or on lowered steps.

The vehicle had no armor – a typical example of wartime improvisation for rapid anti-tank support.

Combat Use

The ZiS-42 with the ZiS-2 cannon was used:

• for the rapid deployment of anti-tank positions,
• in urban warfare where mobility was crucial,
• in support of infantry units,
• and against light and medium armored vehicles of the Wehrmacht.

Thanks to its half-track chassis, the vehicle handled mud and snow better than standard trucks.

Advantages and Disadvantages

• Advantages:
  • High mobility of the anti-tank gun,
  • rapid repositioning capabilities,
  • good traction in difficult terrain,
  • high firepower thanks to the ZiS-2.
• Disadvantages:
  • Lack of armor – the crew was unprotected,
  • limited stability while firing,
  • improvised nature, fluctuating performance.
