The Stridsvagn 103 was a Swedish main battle tank developed based on experience gained from World War II and the Korean War. Emphasis was placed on a low height (1.90 m without the commander's cupola), which led to the Strv. 103 being developed without a turret and in a casemate design. The Bofors 105 mm L/62 cannon was rigidly mounted in the hull and featured an autoloader. The cannon was aimed by adjusting the driving gear. Three 7.62 mm machine guns served as secondary armament. The three-man crew consisted of the commander, the (forward) driver, who also served as the gunner, and the radio operator, who also served as the rear driver. Developed from 1956, the Strv. 103 partially replaced the much larger Stridsvagn 81/101/102/104, based on the Centurion, from 1967 onwards, until it was in turn replaced by the Strv. 122 (a Leopard 2 modification) in 1997.
