The Wiesel 1 A5 MELLS weapon carrier is the modernized, anti-tank capable version of the Wiesel 1 light tracked vehicle and is gradually replacing the previously TOW-equipped variants. As an air-transportable system for paratroopers and light infantry units, the Wiesel 1 remains a key element of mobile anti-tank defense in this configuration – now with significantly increased range, precision, and survivability.
The key difference from the previous version lies in the new guided missile system: Instead of the outdated, wire-guided TOW guided missiles, the A5 MELLS variant uses the modern, optically guided MELLS (Multi-Role Light Guided Missile System) – based on the Spike LR missile from Rafael/EuroSpike. This system allows a range of up to 4,000 meters (or 5,500 meters in later versions), is fire-and-forget capable, and offers a top-attack capability for engaging heavily armored targets. A fire-and-observe mode is also available, allowing the gunner to actively influence the missile's flight. This significantly increases its effectiveness against moving or concealed targets.
During the conversion to the A5 standard, numerous other improvements were implemented in addition to the weapon system: These include a new optical targeting and thermal imaging system, a laser rangefinder, a digital fire control system, and the integration of the PANTHER computer system for improved command and control capabilities within the combat group. The protection and ergonomic aspects were also revised – with new harnessed seats, reinforced mine and fragmentation protection, a curved driver's hatch for better protection and visibility, LED headlights, a rearview camera, and new storage compartments for equipment and spare ammunition.
Despite the extensive upgrades, the vehicle remains extremely compact and lightweight – with a combat weight of approximately 3.5 tons – and is still CH-53 transportable, which is particularly crucial for airmobile missions. The rockets, including the launcher system, can be fired from inside the vehicle, although a certain degree of external exposure of the launcher remains for technical reasons.
