The Leopard 2 A6M A3 is a comprehensively modernized variant of the Leopard 2 A6M and represents a digital transitional solution on the way to the Leopard 2 A7V. The vehicle is still based on the A6M version with enhanced mine protection and the proven 120mm L/55 smoothbore gun. Compared to the original A6M, however, the A3 has been fundamentally redesigned, particularly in the areas of electronics, sensors, and command and control capabilities. The goal is to fully integrate it into modern combat management concepts and NATO structures.
Visually, the A6M A3 closely resembles the Leopard 2 A7V. Notable features include the SPECTUS 2 infrared vision system for the driver, which is also used on the A7V, as well as new periscopes and cameras with high-resolution third-generation thermal imaging systems. The IFIS (Integrated Command and Information System) command and information system is also part of the equipment.
Inside, the ergonomics have been improved, the operating concept modernized, and the equipment fully digitalized. This gives the tank a significantly increased level of situational awareness and enables networked combat operations according to current NATO standards (Network Enabled Operations). The drive system remains unchanged: a 1,500 hp MTU MB 873 Ka-501 V12 diesel engine provides a top speed of approximately 68 km/h with a combat weight of approximately 63 tons. The range is approximately 450 kilometers, and the crew consists of four soldiers (commander, gunner, loader, and driver).
Overall, the Leopard 2 A6M A3 is designed as a "bridging technology." It brings key A7V systems into the field without requiring a complete structural conversion, enabling units to be introduced to modern digital combat operations at an early stage.
