- German Fallschirmjäger World War II
During the war, the paratroopers were integrated into the Luftwaffe combat units to better coordinate with the air forces.
The capture of Crete as part of Operation Merkur in May 1941 was one of the greatest successes of German paratroopers. However, losses were so high that their use was often limited to the role of elite infantry rather than as an airborne force.
In March 1944, the paratroopers of General Kurt Student's 1st Division, holding their ground among the ruins of the monastery of Monte Cassino, offered vigorous resistance to the advancing Allies. Their resistance was so fierce that they were nicknamed the “Green Devils.”
