After the loss of Cyrenaica, Italy requested German intervention, and in February 1941 the first troops of what would become the famous German Afrika Korps were sent to North Africa under the leadership of General Erwin Rommel.
Within months, Axis troops recaptured Cyrenaica and Tobruk and advanced into Egypt.
Due to the constant lack of supplies, they were defeated by the British Eighth Army at El Alamein.
The additional pressure created by the arrival of the Americans in Morocco forced the Afrika Korps to gradually withdraw to Tunisia in 1943.
