The capture of the northern Russian city of Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) seemed a foregone conclusion for the German Wehrmacht. They even prematurely printed invitations to their victory celebration in one of the city's hotels.
However, the Siege of Leningrad, which began on September 9, 1941, was not lifted until 872 days later, on January 27, 1944.
The Germans never managed to capture the city, which held out thanks to a supply route across the lagoon lake—a fragile waterway that froze over in winter, forming a land bridge.
This vital route was known as the "Road of Life." The Siege of Leningrad was the most devastating blockade of a modern city, indeed one of the worst in world history, and claimed up to 1.5 million lives among soldiers and civilians through combat and an unprecedented famine.
