20th WSS Grenadier Division Baltic States 1944

The 20th Waffen Grenadier Division, composed primarily of conscripts from Estonia, was established in the spring of 1944.
This division participated in the German efforts to halt the Baltic Offensive, launched by the Red Army in September/November 1944.
This massive Soviet advance advanced to the Baltic Sea and permanently severed the land connection between the German Army Group Center and Army Group North.
In addition to expelling German troops from Estonia and Lithuania, the ongoing offensive also trapped a large number of German troops in Latvia.
With Army Group North finally cut off, it was renamed Army Group Courland.
The Red Army gradually reduced the size of the Courland Pocket in Latvia, and by the end of the war, another 200,000 German soldiers were taken prisoner there.
The Baltic Offensive claimed a total of 260,000 casualties on both sides.
