In early 1945, the Red Army moved closer to the crumbling Third Reich.
On January 12, 2,203,000 Soviet soldiers launched the Vistula-Oder Offensive from the Vistula River in Poland, and by February 2, they had penetrated deep into Germany.
Their strategic offensive took them to the Oder River, just 70 km from Berlin.
The Soviet offensive claimed an incredible 377,000 German lives and left 292,000 missing.
One of the German units assigned to halt the enemy advance was the 11th Volunteer Panzergrenadier Division "Nordland."
Formed in February 1942, this mechanized infantry division was composed of volunteers from a bewildering mix of foreign nationalities. In the Battle of the Vistula and Oder, it fought to near annihilation.
