One of the machines that supported the BMW Group A touring car racing era is the BMW M3 based on the E30 3 Series. The BMW M3 E30 was developed by BMW Motorsport GmbH, primarily responsible for BMW's motorsport division, and was designed to compete with the Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16 Cosworth. The body was fitted with blister fenders front and rear to accommodate wider treads and larger tires. To improve aerodynamics, the rear side window was designed to be inclined, and a rear wing and a front spoiler were added. With a displacement of 2.3 liters, the engine was highly tuned to produce 300 horsepower for maximum performance. Afterwards, the Evolution model was also developed and the performance was increased, such as increasing the displacement to 2.5 liters. In order to qualify the production volume per year required for Group A homologation regulations, the engine was manufactured by BMW Motorsport and BMW headquarters was responsible for the production of the vehicle.
In 1987, the BMW M3 E30 acquired homologation and took part in the race, immediately proving that it won the DTM and the WTCC. The BMW M3 E30 also took part in the 300 km SUGO Group A race in Japan at the end of 1987 and showed its skills in the Division 2 class, which was contested by a machine with a 1.6 to 2.5 liter displacement. In the Division 2 class there were no cars that could compete against the BMW M3 E30, and each team took over one by one from the Auto Tech Racing M3 team, which was the first to field the BMW M3 E30. In the 1990 season, 9 M3 E30s were used by 7 teams. The bitter battles between the individual teams fascinated the spectators perfectly.
