In 1954, a production vehicle made its debut at the International Automobile Exhibition in New York.
Despite its "road car" status, the 300 SL was a racy and elegant vehicle that was very popular and well received in the United States.
It has a 3-liter in-line 6-cylinder engine - hence the "300" in its name - an extremely light body - SL stands for "Sport Leicht" or "Leicht Sport" - and the striking gullwing doors.
By the end of production in May 1957, 1,400 units had been produced.
