The Supermarine Spitfire is considered by many to be the most aesthetically designed single-seat fighter of World War II.
It was designed by the brilliant British designer Reginald J. Mitchell and first flew on March 5, 1936.
It was an advanced, single-seat, low-wing aircraft with a very smooth, flush-riveted metal skin and a long, flowing front fairing.
With the famous liquid-cooled 12-cylinder “Merlin” engine from Rolls-Royce, which produced more than 1000 hp, the Spitfire Mk. 1 reached a top speed of 586 km/h.
The very pronounced elliptically shaped wing helped reduce parasitic drag and allowed for a relatively thin wing design.
She carried a large coolant cooler under the starboard wing and a small oil cooler under the port wing, giving her an asymmetrical appearance when viewed from the front and below.
The retractable main landing gear also contributed to its smooth lines and gave it greater performance.
The Mk I was armed with eight 7.7mm machine guns, four per wing.
Early production of the Mk I Spitfires used a two-blade, fixed-pitch wooden propeller, which was later replaced by a two-blade, two-pitch wooden propeller.
Known as the Battle of Britain, the Spitfire's combat mission to thwart the German attempt to attack mainland England in 1940 secured this fighter a place of honor forever in the minds of the men and women of Britain.
